Sustainability
Description
Solutions that are affordable, support the Carbon Neutral targets and offer business resilience.
Aspiration/Vision
A resilient UK Defence environment which promotes environmentally sustainable solutions and ensures sustainability, alongside support, are considered throughout the product/platform/ service lifecycle from concept and design through to disposal. This environmental resilience will not be at that cost of operational capability, the ability to support forces freedom of manoeuvre in the field or create dependence on politically or socially unsustainable materials, suppliers or solutions.
First Steps/Building Blocks
- Roadmap Climate Change Resilience and the implications of how to operate in a climate-changed world
- Establish feasible measures for Estate Mitigation. The primary vehicle to offset the irreducible minimum of operational capability emissions in the short to medium terms
- Capability Adaptation. Changing how we operate and procure now and in the future including the creation of processes and support for legacy defence assets that will have to be managed through exemption or offset.
- Leadership, Policy and Process Change. Embedding climate change and sustainability into Defence’s culture. Adopting and promoting sustainability driven initiatives such as the circular economy.
