AI Expert Group
MOD has identified the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy as a major strategic issue for Defence, with the potential to alter everything the Department does. The development, adoption and use of AI by Defence raises unique opportunities as well as technical, ethical, legal, safety and organisational challenges. MOD must address these challenges to guide responsible innovation across Defence, demonstrate their values on the international stage, retain the trust of Industry partners and reflect the values of UK citizens. The Artificial Intelligence Expert Group (AIEG) has been established to support MOD and the wider Defence community by providing independent advice and guidance regarding the development, usage and management of AI in applications across the enterprise.
Purpose
The key value of the AIEG lies in bringing together a diverse range of perspectives in the spirit of collaboration and robust challenge. With the ultimate goal of helping secure strategic advantage for UK Defence by convening forums to shape MOD’s approach to AI adoption. This collaboration is crucial as rapid technological advancements within industry and academia, coupled with shifting geopolitical dynamics, demand close cooperation with our partners. This is the only way we can ensure our defence capabilities are innovative, interoperable with allies, and able to keep pace with global competition and emerging threats.
Goverenance
Governance is exercised in a tri-chair arrangement between DAIC, ATI and TD-Info with Ch DAIC fulfilling the Senior Responsible Owner role. The role of the co-chairs is to set a collaborative tone for member-delivered activities and agree the priorities for the group.
Membership
Membership of the AIEG is managed jointly by the Alan Turing Institute and TD-Info with oversight from DAIC. For MOD, membership of the steering group is assigned, by role, in accordance with priorities set by Ch DAIC. With the intent of developing a knowledgeable, diverse and trusted group, ATI will invite subject matter experts from academia, member businesses or from government. Industry membership of the AIEG is intended to be organic with new members on-boarded by invitation from existing members.
