Team Defence Information Bulletin - September 2021
August has been a busy month for TD-Info, despite the school holidays, and September promises to be the same.
Several members of the TD-Info Task Force will be attending this year’s DSEI 2021 Exhibition at the Excel Conference Centre, London from 14-17 September. Please come and meet us at the TD-Info Stand (collocated with the ADS Stand) or email to pre-arrange a meeting with either Phil Williams, Steve Green, or Andy Whatman.
Thank you to everyone who joined the recent inaugural MDI Working Group (MDI WG) meeting. We are delighted to announce that Steph McMenamin (BAE Systems) and Paul Eastwood (Costain) have both been appointed as joint Industry Co-Chairs to the MDI WG and will join Steve Hyde (MOD Co-Chair) in leading this rapidly evolving subject across the UK Defence Community. Several notable events are coming up in the next few months:
Launch of “Ask Me Anything” Webinars – Commencing 30 September
MOD Defence Digital and TD-Info are pleased to launch a programme of Ask Me Anything (AMA) webinars. Over the next twelve-months, senior representatives from across Defence Digital, Front Line Commands, and Defence Industry will discuss the opportunities offered by effective exploitation of the key themes highlighted in the strategy, how it supports the strategic outcomes and answer your questions regarding the adoption of digital in defence.
The first of these AMA Webinars will be held on Thursday, 30 September; the topic will be “Digital Strategy and the Digital Backbone” led by Maj Gen Tom Copinger-Symes, Director Strategy and Military Digitisation, MOD Defence Digital and Caroline Bellamy, Chief Data Officer, MOD. MDI WG Interactive Session – 8 September (09:30 to 12:30)
The MDI WG will be hosting a 3-hour interactive session to discuss the important topic of ‘What constitutes a High Level Framework, Design and Architecture for MDI’. The aim is to involve a smaller focus group (circa ~ 20 people) who have already joined the MDI WG together with some supporting MOD invitees. MDI WG “Spotlight Sessions” – 27 September (13:30 to 16:30)
The MDI WG will also be running a series of “Spotlight Sessions” on topics of interest to the wider community. The first of these will be “Understanding the strategic intent of IR, DCP and DSIS” which will be hosted, virtually on 27 September 2021. Further details and how to register are available here. Defence Digital Synthetic Environment and Def Sp Digital Twin Opportunities – 9 September
TD-Info will be hosting an on-line presentation on the synergies and interactions between the work being conducted by MOD Defence Digital and the Defence Support Digital Twin Community of Practice (COP). The session will provide a mechanism for wider stakeholder engagement that will shape and inform the Digital Twin COP work streams.
Defence Digital have been developing a concept for a Defence synthetic environment platform and supporting Defence synthetic ecosystem; the Defence Support Digital Twin COP are developing visions, vignettes and use cases for Digital Twin application across several two-star focus areas.
TD-Info Member, Improbable, will provide a presentation on their work with MOD Defence Digital which will be followed by Steve Penver providing a view of the touch points and opportunities with the Def Sp Digital Twin COP implementation activities. Data Driven Organisations – Task Launch Event – 10 September
MOD Defence Support has sponsored a 12-week project to investigate the drivers for – and benefits of – organisations being ‘data-driven’. Whilst the technical attributes that underpin collaboration, decision-support and data-management/analysis will be considered, this investigation will focus on the cultural and behavioural aspects that have delivered successful outcomes for those businesses that might describe themselves as – or on a journey towards – being ‘data-driven’. The output will help to inform MOD Business Modernisation for Support (BMfS) Programme.

Trading Forum Meeting – 21 September
The aim of the Trading Forum is to provide a forum for TD-Info Members and MOD to support and drive the design, implementation and exploitation of the MOD Contracts, Purchasing & Finance (CP&F) system and business change needs across the MOD’s Trading Partners. The next on-line meeting of the Trading Forum will be held at 11am on Tuesday, 21 September. Details of the next meeting is available to TD-Info Members here. Defence Infrastructure Sustainability Industry Conference - 28 October 2021
Please put a place in your diary for the forthcoming Defence Infrastructure Sustainability Industry Conference to be held on 28 October from 09:00 to 17:00. This will be a hybrid event held at the Tidworth Barracks and online using MS Teams. Major General Bobby Walton-Knight, DIO Director of Strategy and Plans, will be the keynote speaker for the event supported by Ministers and senior representatives from the MOD, industry, and academia. Support Chain Seminar 2021 – 12-13 January 2022
Please note the new date for the Support Chain Seminar, a joint event hosted by TD-Info and DE&S. SCS is a hybrid event being held (in person) at Aerospace Bristol (online via the Kahootz platform). Adrian Baguley, DE&S Director General Strategic Enablers and Deputy CEO, will be this year’s keynote speaker. Further details will be issued in due course. Fuel Transformation Programme - Request For Information (RFI)
Following the recent Logistic Transformation Team Industry day that took place on 28 July, the Fuels Transformation Programme (FTP) have formerly released a Request for Information (RFI) seeking feedback from industry on the opportunities and means of implementing the transformation of the effectiveness and efficiency of the Defence Fuels Enterprise (DFE).
The RFI is issued as part of a market engagement phase and is NOT part of a formal procurement process. If you interested in participating, please respond to the RFI using the DESLD-FuelsInfra-FES@mod.gov.uk address and copy to firstname.lastname@example.org. Note that emails sent to any other MOD address may not be received or replied to. The closing date is Tuesday 14 September 2021.
UKRI and KTN Study of Robotic Test Facilities
KTN is currently conducting a scoping study of robotics testing facilities across the UK on behalf of UKRI. This study will seek to establish what facilities already exist as well as establishing the needs of robotics developers and end users to identify gaps in the market. KTN are looking to speak to test facilities, robotics developers and end-users of robotics during September and October. If you would like to take part in this study, please email Mel Cassley.
Future Capability Group Open Innovation Laboratory (OIL) Industry Engagement Strategy
TD-Info and KTN are supporting the DE&S Future Capability Group (FCG) with industry engagements. FCG OIL provides a mechanism for early market engagements in novel technologies and solutions ahead of commercial competition across a range of future capability programmes.
