MOD's Information Systems & Services (ISS) introduces a Step Change for the future delivery of Defence IT Services with the delivery of MODCloud.

The ISS Applications Services DevOps Team (ASDT), under the leadership of Brigadier Sara Sharkey, now offer access to Private and Public Cloud Services in a way that is transforming the delivery of IT Services across Defence.

Collectively these services, known as 'MODCloud' provide a broad range of assured Cloud Services, from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) through to Software as a Service (SaaS).

MOD Chief Information Officer, Charles Forte comments ‘'MODCloud services are a critical step forward and a key element of delivering my D&IT Strategy for Defence. The skills and knowledge required to deliver and exploit these capabilities within D&IT are key in ensuring we are fully equipped to remain at the very front of delivering innovative services for our customers to exploit.'

These MODCloud Services are the first type of Cloud Service to be approved for live consumption by the ISS Release and Deployment Board to process and store MOD data – including OFFICIAL SENSITIVE. They can be used by the whole Defence community to support delivery of various capabilities from innovation and sandboxing, through to large scale, complex production applications.

Phillip Jones, Executive Director, ISS comments, 'The delivery of secure Cloud Services under MODCloud gives Defence an opportunity to think very differently about how to optimise service delivery for our customers. The partnerships and solutions we are building with our Global Cloud providers will enable a very different way of planning for improvements across the whole of Defence Information Services.'
Public Cloud is being used by several TLBs and projects to identify how new services and capabilities can be delivered to Defence. Teams are able access accounts to the Public Cloud offerings provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure – this provides teams with freedom to evolve their own Services that take advantage of industry leading capabilities.

Prolinx offer a Private Cloud solution, which is currently being widely consumed across Defence. Simon Blackburn, Prolinx Director comments, ‘Prolinx takes great pride around working in partnership with ASDT to provide an agile and flexible catalogue-based private cloud operating within Authority Zone 1, connected directly onto the MOD Core Network for the first time. Huge progress has been made since its inception and a development roadmap is now captured to further enhance the MCP service offerings delivering greater benefit to the customer.’

Chris Hayman, Director, UK&I Public Sector at AWS comments, "We are delighted to be the first Public Cloud provider to achieve UK MOD Interim Authority to Operate (IATO) and to work together on MODCloud ICE (Internet Connected Environment) to support Defence’s ambition to put modern digital capability at the heart of how it operates. The use of cloud and other new digital technologies that AWS provides enables customers to transform their IT environment and to improve business performance.’

Charles Sudborough, Microsoft Account Director Defence comments, ‘Microsoft is working with UK Defence to support the organisation in building digital and information capabilities. Our public cloud, Azure, is part of this effort and will provide a defence-wide platform to drive innovation whilst reducing costs. We are working with the Ministry of Defence on its journey to the cloud, and are closely supporting the organisation to ensure a successful onboarding.’
