This is an exciting opportunity to be with 40 MOD & Industry colleagues for a full day’s session at a start-of-the art Distribution Centre, newly opened by Hermes in Rugby. As well as a tour of the facility, there is a full agenda on the theme of Automation & Robotics in the Defence Supply Chain. This visit is facilitated by the Support Information Innovation Community of Interest (SII-COI) in association with Team Defence Information. The aim of this SII-COI event is to provide cross sector input to inform the ‘Automating Supply Chain Transactions’ workstream; a part of the Defence Support Network Transformation programme.
Automation and Robotics have the potential to assist with transforming the Defence Supply Chain (DSC) but faced with so many options what approach is most appropriate and where should the automation effort be focused to deliver most efficiencies? To answer these questions this collaboration event will share use-case experience of commercial approaches to: digital transformation, technology enabled automation, emerging operating models and the benefits achieved.
The event will consist of 4 main sections:
Defence Supply Chain – The authority will describe the business drivers for automation, the current supply chain processes and recent experience of implementing digital change
Commercial Digitisation Use Case – Industry will present use cases on how they develop their digital strategies, what they automated, the technology exploited, benefits realised and the hurdles they had to overcome
‘So What’ Workshops – with an understanding of the DSCT aspirations and having heard from a range of industry use cases small group brainstorming sessions will consider what and where effort should be focused, the benefits that could be achieved and the blockers to be overcome. The groups will then feedback their top 3 recommendations for what and where in the supply chain Defence should automate first
Automated Distribution Centre Tour – As a fitting end to the day Hermes will provide a tour of their brand new automated distribution centre capable of processing over 1M parcels per day and how this enables then to meet the increasing demands of the modern consumer
- Planned presentations include:
- LDOC Strategy direction and need for automation
- Army Current systems
- Camcode Current 2D barcode initiative
- Navy Automation on the QEC
- Hermes Digital strategy and automated Fulfilment Centre
- Accenture Robotic Process Automation
- SAP Automated 3D printing on the move and supply chain operating disruption
- K&N TBC

- 'So What' brainstorm session
- Tour of the Hermes Fulfilment Centre
There is plenty of opportunity to get involved hosting, speaking and attending future events. Spaces at events are limited depending on the size of the venue and allocated through TD-Info on first come first serve basis, usually one place per company.
